Interestingly, only Alec Bedser separates this lot on the all-time list. So is it a cluster, or something more perturbing?

If Caddick had been able to produce his second innings bowling in the first innings as well, he'd have got well over 300 wickets.

If Freddie and Gough had had better luck with injuries, then likewise.

Having said that, if Fred Trueman had played all the tests that England played between his debut and retirement (120 - FST played only 67 of them, mainly because he was from Yorkshire) he'd have got over 400 wickets.

Yes, FST's strike rate was way above any of that section of the list - Goughy was closest, which would please him...
